Flashback Friday: Green Smoothies for a Glowing Complexion

Happy Friday loves! One of the (many) new things I want to try and do here on my blog is to start a "Flashback Friday" series to share some of my older posts that some of you may have missed! I wrote a lot of health and diet related posts back when I first started my blog and since I want to do more of those going forward, I figured this would be a good way to start incorporating them! :-)

So, with all that being said, let's check out the first flashback post - this was first written in April of 2013...

"Green Smoothies for a Glowing Complexion"

I've mentioned in previous posts how diet can impact not just your overall health, but your skin as well. One of the things I love to incorporate into my diet is a green smoothie.

Photo is public domain

Now, when I say "green smoothie", I mean just that. Greens, maybe some fruit to sweeten and water or a nut milk of choice. No cow's milk, no yogurt, no ice cream, no sugar. We're trying to get the glow in our complexion, and dairy, sadly, does not do a body or your skin good.

Some of the many benefits of drinking green smoothies are:

~ more energy
~ weight loss
~ clearer, more radiant skin
~ stable blood sugar and less cravings for sugar
~ better digestion
~ fewer mood swings
...and the list can go on.

One of my favorite, quick green smoothie recipes involves just a handful of raw, organic baby spinach, a banana, a sprinkle of chia seeds, and water. Blend and yum!

Another of my absolute favorites is Kimberly Snyder's Glowing Green Smoothie (check it out here). This smoothie contains over 3 cups of dark, leafy greens, which is more than most people consume in a week (unless you're a vegetarian of course! :-D)

Another great benefit that smoothies have is that by blending the greens, the nutrients that are inside the plant cells are made more readily available to the body. Also, blending keeps all of the fiber intact, which is important for digestion. And as you know, digestion is critical for flushing toxins out of the body and for keeping your skin clear.

Just by adding one green smoothie to your diet a day,you will start to not only feel better, but your skin will become more radiant and healthy as well. :-)

Do you drink green smoothies? What is your favorite recipe? Would you like to see more posts like this? Let me know!

Peace and love,
~Sabrina

A New Year and Some New Goals!

Happy 2015 loves! I know this is a little late, but I hope everyone had a fabulous New Year's! I for one am excited for a new year, as I plan on making the most of this one! Starting with focusing more on listening to what my body needs in order to heal, rather than ignoring it and pretending I am OK. The past few years have really taken a toll on me - physically, mentally and emotionally and I am ready for a fresh start!

So, in keeping with that thought, I have a list of goals I hope to accomplish in 2015! Wish me luck! ;-)

Here goes....

1) First and foremost, to stop stressing over everything! I have always been a "high stress" person and unfortunately, it's really done a doozy of a number on my health. So step one is, learn how to cope with shit better!

2) Ass off the couch - Adrenal Fatigue and Chronic Depression be damned! It's time to get back on the treadmill!

3) Don't overdo it with #2! I tend to get addicted very quickly to working out and end up injuring myself somehow and then it's back on the couch to recover..repeat cycle...

4) Eat more mindfully. While I do try and eat as clean as I can, since my back surgery two years ago, and with other issues I've been dealing with, I've had a few more "cheat days" than I should. I need to get back to eating the foods that make me feel (and look) my best! A glass or two of red wine is OK, 3-4 definitely is not!

5) Stop comparing myself to others. This has always been an issue of mine, but it's one I really need to get over. I need to focus more on what makes me unique and special instead of wishing I looked like someone else. I need to learn to love my flaws, rather than dwell on them constantly.

6) Blog more frequently as well as focus more on expanding what topics I cover. While I still plan on reviewing new products, I also want to write more on other areas of green living. I have a lot of ideas and can't wait to bring them to fruition so stay tuned! ;-)

These are just a few of the (many) resolutions I hope to keep this year! I will also be sharing new products I've been testing, a new wishlist and my top favorite brands/products from 2014 in the next week or so. In the meantime, you can check out the lists I did from 2013 here and here!

Do you have any goals or resolutions for this year? If so, I'd love to hear them! :-)

Peace & Love,
~Sabrina xx

Brand Obsession: Board & Batten "Farm to Skin" Skincare

"Board and Batten was inspired by the beautiful landscape of Lake County, Florida, where we reside in our plantation style farm. Our name represents the timeless, back to basics construction that we apply to all our products. The foundation of ingredients comes from a countryside of orange groves, green pastures, and cypress-lined clean lakes.

Board and Batten offers a gentle yet effective skin care line. Our products are designed to nourish and balance skin using organic plant oils, cold-pressed extracts, as well as raw honey, and bamboo charcoal that come straight from our farm. Since our products are handcrafted in small quantities, each ingredient is carefully chosen to directly benefit your skin.

Our name and our packaging reflect our simple, yet effective, philosophy of balancing and restoring the skin with ingredients derived from a naturally balanced source."

I wanted to start this post with a few quotes from their website to set the stage, so to speak, of what this brand is about. Natural, from the farm ingredients, simply, yet beautifully packaged products that nourish and pamper your skin like nothing you've ever tried.

I was so impressed by this brand, that I reached out to their PR Rep, Paige Wolf to find out more. She generously sent me a few of their products to try and let me just say, there is nothing simple or basic about the performance of these products! :-)

Here is what I received:

1) Herbal Remedy Masque - This masque is the perfect solution to dull, uneven or acneic skin. Ingredients such as Ginger, Bentonite Clay, Holy Basil, Tumeric, Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide (vitamin B3) and Vitamin C all help to exfoliate, detoxify, brighten, hydrate and soothe skin. I found this to be extremely helpful in battling those annoying hormonal breakouts, as well as keeping those frustrating dry patches away! I also noticed my skin to be calmer and brighter after using this. Just be aware that the alpha hydroxy acids in this masque may cause photosensitivity, so definitely don't forget your sunscreen when you go out!

Price - $54
Ingredients -  Laminaria (Algae) Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Bentonite Clay, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Extract, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Peel Powder, Ocimum Sanctium (Holy Basil) Powder, Ficus Carica (Fig) Extract, Glycerin, Goto Kola Extract, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, Red Brassica Oleracea (Cabbage) Powder, Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid), Niacinamide  (Vitamin B3) Powder, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar Powder, L-ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Bilberry (Vaccinum Myrtillus) Extract, Sugar Cane (Saccharum Officinarum), Orange (Citrus Aurantium Dulcis), Lemon (Citrus Limon), Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum), Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia( Lavender) Oil, Paradisi (Grapefruit) Oil

2) B&B for Lips - All I have to say about this lip balm is that it is addicting! From the sweet orange citrus scent (and taste!) to the creamy, rich texture that just glides on without being sticky or too greasy. Add to that nourishing oils such as Meadowfoam, Carrot and Sunflower, plus anti-oxidants and sun protection thanks to Raw Shea Butter and Vitamin E, my lips have never felt so pampered!

Price - $12
Ingredients - Beeswax*, Raw Shea Butter, Meadowfoam Oil*, XV Carrot Oil*, Sunflower Oil*, Orange Wax, Cetyl Esters, Vitamin E, Vitamin C
*indicates organic
3) Calming Lift - I loved this toner so much that I included it among my Winter skin favorites a few posts ago (read it here)! This contains ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Rose Flower Water, and Glycerin to hydrate as well as Organic Aloe Leaf Juice to soothe, heal and nourish. I'm obsessed with this! :-)

Price - $30
Ingredients -  Organic Aloe Barbadensis ( Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Flower Water, Glycerin, Leuconostoc Ferment Filtrate, Silk Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid

4) Seeds of Today Serum - This beautiful serum contains some of the most potent seed oils and extracts that it will make you think you have stumbled onto the Fountain of Youth! Both Watermelon and XV Carrot Seed oils provide essential fatty acids to regenerate skin cells, Pomegranate Seed oil increases skin barrier function, while Date Seed extract has been clinically proven to protect the skin from environmental sources of aging. I love the slight Watermelon scent and how easily this absorbs into my skin, without feeling heavy or greasy. Instead, it deeply moisturizes my skin, but doesn't break me out, so huge win there! :-)

Price - $38
Ingredients -  Watermelon Seed Oil, Caprylic/CapricTtriglyceride and Date Seed Extract (D'Orientine S), Extra Virgin Carrot Seed Oil, Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil, Vetiver  Essential Oil,  Grapefruit Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil,  Tocopherol (natural vitamin E)

Have you ever tried Board & Batten? What are your thoughts? Which products intrigue you most? Let me know!

*Products were generously sent to me for review, however, all thoughts and opinions are my own

Rooted Beauty - Some Gift Ideas + a Coupon Code!

Happy Saturday Blushing Beauties! I hope you are taking advantage of all the fantastic deals going on right now! Speaking of which, I have some more gift ideas (as well as some exciting news) I wanted to share with you!

I've recently had the privilege of being asked to partner with Rooted Beauty for the holiday season and I couldn't be more excited! I had reviewed some of their lovely products a few months ago (which you can read about here), and have been a fan ever since. If you haven't heard of Rooted Beauty, they are an amazing, eco-conscious, natural brand that strives to improve the lives of women around the world through their Woman2Woman Project. A portion of each product purchased goes to help a woman escape extreme poverty and trafficking. I'd say that is a pretty compelling reason to check them out!

I'll be sharing their products and any deals/sales they'll have from now until Christmas, but today, I want to highlight a few of their products I thought you might like! :-)

A Few of My Current Winter Skin Faves + A BOGO Sale Happening at Celtic Complexion!

Hey blushing beauties! Now that Winter has officially reared its ugly head, it's time to switch up the old beauty routine a bit to make sure skin is sufficiently hydrated during these cold months.

I've been going through my own bathroom cabinets and making a few adjustments here and there to my current regimen and I thought this would be the perfect time to share with you a few of the products I have been incorporating into my normal routine. Since this is just the start of the Winter season, products used may change, depending on what my skin is in need of at the time, but for now, these are just a few of the additions I have made. :-)

1) Celtic Complexion Winter Skin Balm Bar* - I honestly don't think there is a product that founder and formulator Jennifer Devlin could make that I won't love (you can read on my love for this brand here)! She very graciously sent me this to test and I have to say that this is going to be my (and probably my hubby's) BFF all Winter long! Formulated with ingredients such as Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Borage Oil and Raw Organic Coconut Oil, this will keep skin hydrated and soothed no matter how harsh the weather is! Also, it comes in a handy portable tube that you can take with you everywhere you go! Use it on your face, hands, lips, under/over make-up and even to tame static-y hair from dry heat! I've used this in a dozen different ways, and just can't seem to get enough (do I need an intervention? Nah...)! And for those of you who haven't yet gotten on the Celtic Complexion bandwagon (shame on you!! :-P), have I got some good news for you! This Monday, 11/24/14, you can double your pleasure with their BOGO sale happening on their website. This is a one day only deal so don't miss out! Also, this Winter Skin Balm is only available Oct 1-March 31 so you definitely don't want to skip out on this sale!

Price - $42
Ingredients - Shea butter, jojoba oil, raw organic coconut oil, squalane oil (from vegetarian sources), borage seed oil, evening primrose oil, apricot kernel oil, backhousia citriodora.

2) Celtic Complexion Coconut Creme Cleanser* - (full review here) - This lush, creamy cleanser won't strip precious skin oils, but rather nourishes and hydrates, while effectively removing dirt, make up and impurities.

3) Board & Batten Calming Lift Spray* - (full review to come) - I love to use a hydrating mist after cleansing and this one contains Aloe Leaf Juice, Rose Flower Water and Hyaluronic Acid to keep skin moisturized. A keeper for sure!

4) Elaa Skincare Glow Exfoliating Fruit AHA Dew - If you love to exfoliate your skin, but can't tolerate a "mechanical" exfoliator (especially if you have active blemishes or rosacea), this is the perfect solution. Organic fruit acids gently slough off dead skin cells while leaving your skin soft and well..glowing. I adore everything my dear friend and brand owner, Jill Stacey creates, but this is probably at the top of my list of favorites. I like to use this a few times a week as an overnight treatment to make my skin look more radiant and clear in the morning. And sensitive skinned gals don't need to worry about any stinging or burning as this is extremely gentle. Read more on Jill and Elaa here, here and here.

5) Lulu Organics Hair Powder (Jasmine Scented 1oz) - Since I stopped using shampoos with sulfates, my hair can go at least 3 days between washings (don't worry, I still shower everyday!). During the cold, dry months of Winter, I like to extend that to 4 days if I can and using a dry shampoo keeps my hair looking fresh and smelling clean. I found this one on Amazon and fell in love with it at first use! I love the Jasmine scent as well as the uber chic packaging. And the fact that it doesn't contain any talc or other nasties is a huge win as well. Oh, and it works too!

6) Eminence Organics Firm Skin Acai Booster Serum - I'm a huge Eminence fan (you can read reviews here and here) and this product proves to me once again why that is so. With anti-oxidant rich Acai Berry to improve skin tone, Hyaluronic Acid (from Marshmallow Root Extract) to deeply hydrate and plump up skin cells, and high in vitamin C Maral Root, this is a true skin saver this time of year. It can used as a stand alone serum or mixed in your favorite mask, serum or moisturizer for added hydration benefits. I personally like to mix it with my Acure Organics Rose Argan Oil during the day when my skin is feeling a little "parched".

These are just a few of my favorite things at the moment. What are some of your favorite products to use during the cold weather months?

*PR products. All other products were purchased by me.

Peace & Love,
Sabrina xx

3) Seriously Firming Serum - With Certified Organic Argan Oil to deeply hydrate, Borage Oil to soothe inflammation and Cranberry Oil to help nullify those nasty free radicals, this lovely serum is perfect for when your skin needs a serious hydration boost. And now that it is getting colder (we're battling "snowmageddon" here in good ol' Buffalo, NY!), my skin has been getting a little more on the dry side, so this has become a staple in my night time routine. And though I haven't really noticed much "firming" from using this, it definitely has been keeping my skin quite hydrated as well as break out free!

Price - $22.99 for 1 oz
Ingredients - Organic Safflower (high-oleic) Oil, Organic Sesame Seed Oil, Organic Pumpkin Seed Oil, Organic Borage Oil, Organic Argan Oil, Organic Sweet Orange Oil, Organic Cranberry Seed Oil, Organic Bulgarian Lavender Oil, Fair Trade Certified™ Organic Olive Oil, Organic Rosemary Oil.

But that's not all....

I was also generously gifted with the 3 new Aromatherapeutic Argan Oil blends which I am completely over the moon in love with. Use them neat or mix them with other oils/moisturizers, use as a hair or cuticle treatment, the options are endless!

1) Citrus Ginger - A warm, citrus scented blend that is great for stimulating circulation in the skin. Ginger is anti-inflammatory, while lemon is anti-oxidant, astringent as well as clarifying. I like to use this on any acne prone areas.

Ingredients:
Certified Organic Argania Spinosa (Argan Oil), Organic Citrus Limon (Lemon), Organic Citrus Sinensis (Orange), Organic Zingiber Officinale (Ginger)

2) Coconut - Now that winter is officially here, I've been using this a lot more, as it reminds me of the warmer days of summer! If you love the scent of coconut, you will adore this blend. I especially like to use this as a hair treatment to keep my long tresses frizz free (and yes, I do smell my hair all day afterwards..).

Ingredients - Certified Organic Argania Spinosa (Argan Oil), Organic Coconut Flavor Oil

3) Rose - This one is probably my favorite of the three and the one I reach for the most. I actually like to mix this with the Seriously Firming Facial Serum at night and use alone during the day under the Oil Control Lotion, as the Rose Geranium essential oil provides extra hydrating, balancing and clarifying benefits.

Ingredients - Certified Organic Argania Spinosa (Argan Oil), Organic Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Peel (Orange) Oil, Organic Pelargonium Graveolens Flower (Rose Geranium) Oil, & Organic Cymbopogon Martini (Lemongrass) Oi

Price for each - $12.99 for 1oz

One last thing....

Acure is having a "super sale" going on through December (while supplies last of course) so make sure you check it out before all the goodies are gone! Here is just a preview of what is on sale:

Product Obsession: Dr. J Organics Organic C Powder Kit

DrJ Organics is a California based company that manufactures personal care products for medical doctors, skin professionals and also for home use. They strive to produce the safest, most potent and effective natural and organic skin and hair care products available.

Wherever possible, they use renewable resources as well as ecologically sound manufacturing practices to minimize their carbon footprint. Their products are not "watered down" and do not contain phthalates, gluten, parabens, petrolatum or other harmful ingredients.

I was fortunate to be able to try their Organic C-Powder Kit and today I am going to share my experience with it and thoughts on it.

We all know that vitamin C is great for brightening skin and promoting collagen production. It's an amazing ingredient for keeping skin healthy, youthful and glowing. However, as wonderful as this ingredient may be, it can be unstable in certain forms and can also oxidize when exposed to air, thus rendering it ineffective while also creating free radicals in the body. Eeek!

What I love about Dr. J's vitamin C product is that it is in a powder form, making it more potent, while avoiding the issue of oxidation as it is prepared "fresh" before you use it. This is essentially a DIY serum that you create mixing the C powder with the accompanying activator. This activator is loaded with good for your skin ingredients such as Licorice Root Extract, Black and Green Tea Leaf Extracts, Chamomile and various fruit extracts.

Once the activator is mixed with the vitamin C powder, just shake the mixture until no powder is visible on the bottom of the vial and apply a few drops to clean skin like you would any serum.

One word of caution - if you have sensitive skin, this will sting! It only lasts a second or two, and once you apply your nighttime oil or moisturizer (it's recommended to use this at night), the "stinging" feeling goes away completely.

That little tidbit out of the way, I do love how clear, bright, smooth and glowing my skin looks the next morning after using this. And though the price may be quite steep for the average gal (or guy), if you can afford this, I highly recommend you try it. You won't be disappointed with the results!

One vial should last about 2-3 weeks.

From the Sea of Galilee and Inspired by Nature - Lavido Skincare Review

Lavido is a natural face and body care company based on the use of raw, organic plant oils and ingredients that are combined with volcanic thermal springs as well as purified waters from the Sea of Galilee. Interestingly, these waters, used since Roman times, have both healing and recuperative properties. It was this special ingredient that sparked my interest in this brand the most.

What started as a baby cream in the kitchen of founder Ido Magal has since grown into a global business. And not only are the best raw ingredients continually sourced, but Lavido also incorporates the most top notch and cutting edge technologies into their formulations.

Let's take a look at some of these lovely products:

1) Pomegranate Seed Oil, Lemon and Macadamia Gentle Exfoliator Cream - Formulated with oyster shell powder, organic Pomegrante peel, cold pressed Pomegrante Seed and Citrus Oils, this exfoliating cream gently sloughs off dead skin cells, while also leaving your skin soft and revitalized. I'm a sucker for a good exfoliating product and this one definitely hits all the right notes for me. The texture is kind of a "grainy creamy" consistency, but without being too abrasive for my skin (though if you have extremely sensitive skin or rosacea, this may be a bit too harsh for you) and the scent I find to be quite pleasant due to the Lavender Oil used. This product also doubles as a face mask, and with skin healing ingredients like Black Cumin Seed Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Vitamin E, this has really helped keep pesky blemishes at bay.

Price - $34

2) Evening Primrose Seed, Calendula and Frankincense Ultra Daily Moisture Cream - Rich in Omega 6 acids, vitamins and cold pressed Evening Primrose Seed Oil, this lovely moisturizer soothes and hydrates skin. It also contains Geranium Oil to balance skin, Calendula to soothe, Patchouli, Frankincense and Lavender Oils to rejuvenate and Aloe Vera Leaf Juice to heal. The texture is lightweight and non-greasy, yet deeply nourishes. A little goes a long way, so this will last quite a while. :-)

Price - $39

3) Bulgarian Lavender, Evening Primrose and Avocado Oil Nurturing Hand Cream -  I've never really been one to get excited about hand products, until I tried this one. It's light, silky texture glides on and absorbs quickly and completely, leaving hands super soft, without feeling greasy. It's lightly scented with Lavender, which is calming and soothing to the senses. This will definitely be kept by me to use throughout the day, especially now that the weather is getting cooler and drier!

Price - $13

My overall thoughts: I was quite impressed by all three of these products. I loved the textures, the subtle and pleasant scents, as well as their performance. If I had any complaint at all it would be the use of Phenoxyethanol in the exfoliator and the face cream as I do try and avoid this ingredient whenever I can. I also wished that they included the full ingredients list on the website, which would make it easier for people to see if there is anything in the products that may cause an allergic reaction (or if you're an ingredient nerd like me and just want to know everything that's in it). That's just my two cents. ;-) Other than that, I think this is a wonderful brand, with beautiful products that is more than worth checking out!

The Halloween Tag!

Happy Halloween loves! In honor of one of my absolute favorite holidays, I thought it would be fun to do this tag that Tianna from Storybook Apothecary included me in for today's post! :-)

  1. What’s your favorite Halloween movie? That's a tough one...I don't think I can pick just one, but I always look forward to watching "Hocus Pocus", "The Nightmare Before Christmas", the classics (Dracula, The Wolfman, etc.) and of course, "Halloween" is a must watch for me!
  2. What age did you stop trick-or-treating? I want to say sometime in High School, but I don't remember exactly..
  3. Favorite Halloween costume you’ve ever dressed up as? That's hard to say...my mom always made me the best costumes, including a Red Riding Hood with the wolf's head in my basket. This was back in the 90's before that version of the costume became so popular.
  4. Will you dress up this year? If yes, as what? I'm wearing one of my themed Halloween tees and make up...that's me dressed up..lol
  5. Do you enjoy haunted attractions?  Yes, definitely! I haven't been to any in years, but I always enjoyed them.
  6. Vampires or Werewolves? Vampires..werewolves creep me out depending on which transformation you go with - the man-wolf creatures scare me..the big wolves, I actually think are cool.
  7. Do you prefer to make or buy your costume? If I had the time, I would make my costumes, but last year I purchased one.
  8. Michael Myers or Freddie Kruger? If not for Will Smith's "A Nightmare on my Street" song which made Freddie comical, I'd say him. The first movie still creeps me out. However, there is something really terrifying about the more human "monsters", especially the ones that never speak and never seem to want to die. So I say Michael Myers.
  9. Favorite Halloween candy? Oh gosh, Snickers, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, Candy Corn, Peanut M&M's..the list can go on...
  10. Do you decorate your house for Halloween? I don't. I do have some pumpkin themed decor around my house though if that counts...
  11. Halloween costumes that you dislike/hate? I recently saw one for a sexy ebola nurse...really? Very poor taste.
  12. Have you ever repeated a costume? What was it? My Red Riding Hood costume. I wore it to a party and also to work.
  13. Do you believe in ghosts? I believe in demonic spirits, but not ghosts.
  14. Do you enjoy scary movies? Definitely! Watching one right now - "The Crazies"..really creepy!
  15. Favorite Halloween treat that isn’t store-bought candy? Anything pumpkin!
  16. Favorite way to spend Halloween day/night? I love to spend the day watching horror movies and then gorging myself on Halloween candy after dinner..and of course more scary movies with my hubby!

How are you spending your Halloween? I'd love to know!
