Product Obsession: Eminence Organics Review Part Two - Eight Greens Youth Serum & Moisturizer

I recently did a review of Eminence Organics Oily Skin Starter Set (see review here), and now I am moving on to a few of their anti-aging products.

When it comes to what I use on my face, I really need to be careful. My skin has a tendency to break out without logic or reason at times, so I usually need to give a product at least a week to see if the breakouts go away or get worse.

That being said, I've been a fan of Eminence for a while, and I can honestly say that everything I have tried by them has only made my skin happy. :-)

The Eight Greens Youth Serum  is an energizing serum for dehydrated, oily, hormonal, dry or devitalized mature skin types. In addition to Eminence's signature Biocomplex formula (antioxidants, vitamins, CoQ10 and Alpha Lipoic Acid), it contains Yucca Extract (anti-oxidant and phytoestrogen), Flaxseed/Linseed Extract (Omega 3's and anti-oxidant), Hop Extract (anti-oxidant), Vitex Agnus Castus (source of anti-oxidant biofavanoids) and Paprika to invigorate and rejuvenate the skin. It also contains Lavender Oil to calm, soothe and replenish moisture.

Price - $42.00 for 1oz
Full Ingredients List - Yucca Juice, Lavender Extract, Glycerine, Linseed Extract, Yucca Extract, Chasteberry Extract, Hops Extract, Horsetail Extract, Paprika Extract, Biocomplex (Vitamin A, Ester C, Vitamin E,Coenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid), Spring Water, Glycine Derivative, Lavender Oil, Red Clover Extract.

The Eight Greens Whip Moisturizer - is a "facial rejuvenator to help the skin look and feel younger by maintaining a normal hormonal balance, increasing collagen production and elasticity, and improving skintone, firmness and hydration." This powerhouse moisturizer contains most of the same ingredients as the serum, but also has Stone Crop (hydrating and nourishing), Thermal Water (source of minerals to soften skin), Red Clover (anti-oxidant and isoflavone), and Chlorophyll (bioflavanoid which helps to rejuvenate skin's surface). The texture is rich, but is actually mattifying to my oily skin and so far has not broken me out. :-)

Price - $62.00 for 2 oz
Full Ingredients List - Yucca, Horsetail, Hops, Red Clover, Paprika, Linseed, Stonecrop, Lavender, Bioflavonoids, Yucca Juice, Corn Germ Oil, Natural Cream Base, Biocomplex (Vitamin A, Vitamin C Ester, Vitamin ECoenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid), Salicylic Acid, Glycine Derivative, Glycerine.

My overall thoughts on these two products is that while they state they are primarily for mature, hormonal skin, I feel they will be just as beneficial to younger, oily and acne prone skin as well. They are both hydrating, yet seem to keep oily shine at bay, which for me is a HUGE win! I also find the scents to be quite intoxicating, which may explain why I keep reaching for them in my cabinet. ;-)

As with all really pure products, you only need a very small amount to benefit, so again, these products are very cost effective. So far, these are my absolute favorite Eminence products that I've tried and I will definitely repurchase!

My Favorite Anti-Acne Essential Oils

Back before I knew any better, I used to believe that ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid were necessary to treat my acne breakouts. I had no idea the damage I was potentially causing my skin, not to mention only making my acne worse.

For the past 6 years I have relentlessly researched, studied and tested essential oils and how they can heal and regenerate the skin. I can honestly say that in that time, oils have changed not only my skin, but my life as well.

I'd like to share some of my favorite essential oils that I feel are acne fighting "superstars". I realize that everyone's skin is uniquely different, so what works for me, may not work for you. The best advice I can give is before slathering your face with an oil, always do a patch test to check for any reaction and know that certain oils need to be diluted in a carrier oil before application.

That being said, here is my list, along with some of my favorite products that contain these superstar oils...

     1.  Clove Oil - This oil is a pimple's worst nightmare! It's anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-septic, as well as being a powerful anti-oxidant. Clove Oil has also been found in clinical studies to disrupt the Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria most commonly associated with acne. It has also been known to heal scarring and hyperpigmentation from acne. A word of caution - this oil is potent and needs to be diluted in a carrier oil or you will burn your skin! Two drops in a base of jojoba oil (or carrier oil of your choice) will completely heal even cystic acne in a very short amount of time! :-)

Favorite product with Clove Oil - Skinutritious Clove Oil Serum

     2.  Lavender Oil - One of my favorite oils, lavender may be calming to the senses, but it is devastating to acne! This oil not only cures acne, but can also help to restore already damaged skin! It is highly anti-bacterial, as well as calming to the skin, so it not only heals the blemish, but soothes any irritation caused by the breakout. It can also neutralize any redness. I've tried this both "neat" and diluted and never had a reaction.

Favorite product with Lavender oil - Eminence Tomato Oil Control Gel

    3.  Tea Tree Oil - Probably the most popular and widely used oil for treating acne, tea tree oil is highly anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial, and can not only kill acne causing bacteria, but it restricts its growth as well. It also aids in alleviating any itchiness or inflammation associated with breakouts. Can be used both neat or diluted.

Favorite product with Tea Tree Oil - Eminence Probiotic Cleanser

    4.  Sandalwood Oil - Used for centuries in Ayurvedic Medicine, this oil has amazing skin healing properties. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, and astringent, and can not only soothe and heal blemishes, but can also help to fade scar tissue as well. Sandalwood is also emollient and helps keep skin hydrated. Should be diluted in a carrier oil.

Favorite product with Sandalwood Oil - Elaa Age-Defying Anti-Acne Elixer  (also contains neem, lavender and geranium)

    5.  Neem Oil - This oil is highly treasured in India for it's many healing properties and like Sandalwood, has been used extensively in Ayurvedic Medicine. It is anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial. It is also anti-oxidant as well as being high in fatty acids and vitamin E. It can be used undiluted, but I will warn you, it doesn't smell very good. It kind of has a 'garlicky' type of smell, so you may want to use it at night or in a blend of various oils. Neem has always worked wonders on any blemish I've ever had, so I can look past the stinky smell. :-)

    6.  Geranium Oil - This oil is one of the best I have tried for oily, acne prone skin, but it also has amazing anti-aging properties as well. It is anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, which makes it a powerful enemy to acne bacteria, and it is also astringent and cytophylactic which makes it great for toning, tightening and regenerating skin. Another amazing thing about Geranium oil is that it is a powerful cicatrisant, which means that it prevents and heals scars as well as helping dark and age spots to fade and vanish. This oil is a skin healing miracle in a bottle! :-D Should be diluted before applying to skin.

Favorite product with Geranium Oil - Skin Owl Geranium Infusion Oil

While there are a great deal more essential oils out there that are great for acne prone skin, these 6 are my tried and true favorites. I have a separate list for my favorite anti-aging and scar healing oils. ;-)

Wish List!

I spend a lot of time researching different natural products and ingredients and I realized that there are just too many products that I need to have. So, taking inspiration from my fellow beauty bloggers, I decided to create my own (series) of wishlist(s). I'm not sure how many I will do, but since my list is ever growing, it will probably be a lot. :-P

Onto the list....

  1. La Bella Figura Barbary Fig Renewal Serum - Just about every beauty blogger I follow raves about this brand, and after reading up on it, I can see why it is a favorite! Words cannot express how much I want to have this! It's bordering on obsession! One of the things I am most excited about with this serum, is that it contains broccoli seed oil as the second ingredient! Broccoli seed oil, in addition to being extremely nourishing to your skin, gives the same effect as silicone does, so it's kind of like having a serum and primer in one product. Genius!
  2. Osmia Organics Spot Treatment - I love that the ingredient list is so pure and  simple, yet contains very powerful acne fighters. I've heard nothing but good things about this, so I really want to try it!
  3. Elaa Skincare Gingko Hibiscus Pomegrante Skin Lifting Mist - One of the many products I need to try from this line! I love that it contains pomegrante, as it is one of the most beneficial skin ingredients there is. It also contains ingredients that are great for both anti-aging and anti-acne..so big win for me!
  4. Annmarie Gianni Ayurvedic Facial Scrub - I'm a huge fan of face scrubs, but most are too harsh for my sensitive, acne prone skin. However, this one looks to be very gentle and I love the ingredient list. I am already a fan of Annmarie Gianni products, so I know I will love this one too!
  5. Ilia Lipgloss in Love Buzz - I'm a big lipgloss girl and I especially love pink colors! This shade is just about the most beautiful shade of pink I have ever seen and it needs to be on my lips..like now!
  6. Eminence Firm Skin Acai Booster Serum - I'm a huge fan of Eminence Organics (I'm writing a series of reviews on them), and this little gem is another product I need to have. The thing I like about this is that you add it to your serum or moisturizer for an extra "boost" of anti-aging power. And of course, like all of their products, it contains the most potent and natural ingredients you can find.

Well, that is my list..for now, I'm sure it will grow in a day or two. :-)

Have you tried any of these products? If so, what are your favorites?

My Current Favorite Natural Mineral Powder Foundations For Acne Prone Skin

It seems I have spent an obscene amount of time and money searching for the best foundation for my skin. And while I've had a lot of "misses", I've found a few really great "hits" along the way. One of the things that makes it challenging for me to find a great foundation is that it is really hard to find shades to match my skin tone. I was blessed with yellow-olive tones from my father's Spanish (from Spain) heritage and fair pinkish tones from my mother's English-Irish-German mix. So anything too yellow looks sallow and anything too pink looks ruddy. Thanks mom & dad! Add in the acne and the scarring and I have triple the challenge. But I am not one to give up and my persistence has paid off! Behold, my top picks for mineral foundations! ;-)

*note - these are just powder foundations. I have a separate list of favorite creams and liquids! :-P

  1. The All Natural Face - Out of all the powder foundations I have tried, this one ranks numero uno on my list. First of all, the ingredients are minimal and don't break me out. The color range is the widest I've seen and if for some reason, you can't find your match, the wonderful people at The All Natural Face will custom blend your perfect shade for you! The staying power is great and it doesn't cake like some other brands I have tried. The color I have been wearing is "Porcelain Kissed by Honey" (a fair neutral shade) and it is as close to matching my skintone as can be.
Price - starting at $3.50 for 5 grams to $17.95 for 30 grams
Ingredients - Mica, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide (sunscreens), Boron Nitride (mineral), Oxides (for color)

      2.  Everyday Minerals - Everyday Minerals was the first non-bismuth oxychloride using brand that I had tried and while there are so many pros to this line, there are also a few cons. First of all, all of the foundation bases they have (with the exception of the IT and Jojoba Bases) use lauroyl lysine in their formulations. Now, I realize that this ingredient is an amino acid derivative that is made from natural coconut fatty acid. That being said, some people have reported suffering breakouts from coconut based ingredients, lauroyl lysine being one of them. I personally have not had any issues, but I know others who have. The only other negative I can say about this brand is again, very hard to find the right shade match. Most colors are either too light, too dark, too pink or too yellow for me. On the positive side, the Jojoba Base is simply amazing! Adding Jojoba to a powder foundation is genius in my book. It goes on beautifully, lasts all day, doesn't cake, doesn't break me out and feels light on my skin. Again I just wish they had more fair shade options or did custom blends, but ah well! It is still an amazing line. :-)

Price - $14.99 for 4.8 grams
Ingredients - Mica (CI 77019), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Esters. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499).

     3.  Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques - I've really only worn this over my LBC creme foundation, but I love the wear and texture so much, that I had to include it in this list. Like all of their foundations, this one is also very lightweight and non-cakey, but covers beautifully. It contains organic jojoba oil, allantoin and organic lecithin to hydrate your skin, without creating excess oil. Also, like all of their foundations, this one has not caused me any breakouts, which is always a plus (my skin breaks out if you mention the word "pimple"!). :-D

Price - $26.00 for 9 grams
Ingredients - Sericite, Boron Nitride, Zinc Oxide, Vegetable Derived Magnesium Stearate, Certified Organic Jojoba Oil, Certified Organic Lecithin (from soy), Capryllic/Capric Triglycerides (edible plant based oil), Comfrey Derived Allantoin, Certified Organic Raspberry Extract (+/- iron oxides, mica)

     4.  Faerie Organic - This is the only mineral foundation line that I have seen that actually has a section on their site dedicated to acne help. All of their products are created with skin issues in mind and they make sure to not use anything that would aggravate or cause acne breakouts. They have 2 different formulas, Maximum Coverage, which offers a high coverage level with a semi-matte finish and is great for concealing rosacea, cystic acne, hyperpigmentation and other imperfections. It contains the highest levels of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, both of which are anti-inflammatory. The Air Brush formula is lighter, but still covers everything you need to cover. It also leaves a "glow" to the skin, which helps to deflect attention off of whatever you are trying to hide. ;-) I had first tried the maximum coverage, since with my skin issues that should have been the best option. However, it looked cakey on me and only accented my flaws. I have been using the airbrush formula and that works much better for me. It covers beautifully, is long wearing and has actually helped to clear up breakouts that I have had. My only complaint is that I haven't been able to find a good match yet for my skintone. I haven't given up though, I've been playing around mixing the colors, so eventually I figure out I'll find my shade. :-)

Price - $18.50 for 9 grams
Ingredients - Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Boron Nitride, Iron Oxides

    5.  Alima Pure - Ok, I'm ashamed to even admit that I haven't tested this sooner. And even more ashamed to admit that I've had a container of this for quite awhile. That being said, OH WOW, WHY didn't I give this foundation more of a chance sooner??!!!! I'm wearing Neutral 2 and it is truly my perfect match. It goes on wonderfully, absolutely no caking or settling in anything you don't want to accentuate and it lasts all day long. It is light enough to feel as though you are not wearing foundation, yet still covers all of the things you need to cover. I can't say enough good things about this brand and now I know what all the fuss is about! ;-)

Price - $25.00 for 7.5 grams (you can also buy samples for $1.50)
Ingredients - Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxides.

   6.  Herbs of Grace - I first heard of this lovely brand from my friend, Jill Bickford. This is the only mineral make-up she will use, and I figured if she likes it, it has to be good. And good just doesn't describe this amazing line. I think out of all the foundations I have tried, this one truly offers the most complete coverage - you will not be needing a concealer with this foundation. It is foundation, concealer and sunscreen all in one. There isn't quite the range of shades as in other lines, but they do offer samples, so I would suggest going that route before buying a full sized product. The colors I have tried are Wheat (a light-medium neutral shade), Aveena (light with pink undertones), and Linden (very light neutral shade). I think my best match is probably a mix of all 3 (Linden actually has some yellow tones to it), but I am still experimenting. One word of warning - a little goes a very long way! Too much and it will look "masky".

Price - $18.90 for 8 grams (you can buy samples for $2.50 and a sample kit for $7.00)
Ingredients - Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Mica Powder and Ultramarine Blue

  7.  Lucy Minerals - Lucy Minerals offers 4 different formulations - OriginalOil Control with Silica, Oil Control with Calcium Carbonate and Lucy Light. I personally prefer the "Lucy Light" formula as it is less creamy and doesn't have the same issue of "cakiness" as the others can have. The color I have been using is "Light", a fair neutral shade, and it is a pretty darn good match for my skin I'm happy to say. I did try the "Cream" shade it was way too yellow, although it does make a great anti-redness concealer!

Price - varies depending on the formula: $13.50 (Lucy Light) to $15.00 (all the rest) for 10 grams
Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Magnesium Stearate, Iron Oxides
*the other 3 have the addition of allantoin, Apple Poly (polyphenols), transresveratrol, green coffee been extract, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C)

While I know that there could be other mineral foundation lines out there that are just as good if not better than the ones I have listed, I am still testing brands so my list may change soon. Also, I'm pretty picky when it comes to what I put on my face. I need specific criteria, and so far, these brands have for the most part, met that list. I do want to add that to ensure the best application possible, skin should be exfoliated (dry patches will make the powders look cakey and un-natural), and moisturized. I also like to use a non-silicone primer, such as Vapour Organic's Stratus Instant Skin Perfector before I apply my foundation, as this helps the make-up to go on more smoothly. I also always use a finishing powder to "set" my make-up and give my skin a more polished, air-brushed look. :-)
************************************************************
Have you tried any of these brands, if so what are your likes/dislikes. What is your favorite mineral foundation brand? I'd love to know what you think! :-)

Peace and Love,
~Sabrina

Product Obsession: Eminence Organics Review Part One - Oily Skin Starter Set

I've been meaning to write a review on this brand for quite some time now. I had purchased a dozen or so of their products nearly a year ago, and had stopped using them to try other products.

I recently started using Eminence again and thought this would be a great time to finally buckle down get cracking on writing a review! :-P

I have a ton of products, so I will have to do several reviews to keep from writing a book, as I like to give as much info for you guys as possible, so please bear with me.

Eminence is probably one of the "greenest" companies out there. They not only create products that are kind to your skin, but to the environment as well. Read more on their green practices here.

"The Éminence tradition began in Hungary more than 50 years ago in a small village where family knowledge of using herbs, fruits and plants in natural remedies spanned generations. This unique awareness of medicinal plants was enhanced with skin care innovation to produce natural products that are true to both organic enthusiasts and results-oriented clients. Today the precious ingredients are still hand-picked and hand-mixed in small batches and are combined with thermal hot spring water to create products that contain potent healing and beautifying properties."

All of Eminence's ingredients are organic and non-GMO, which makes me a very happy girl! :-D

My only complaint is that I am not crazy about the smell of the Stone Crop masque, but other than that I can't find any negatives. I've been alternating the masques each day and my skin has been simply glowing! If I had to pick my favorites in this set, it would be the Rosehip and Maize Masque and the Rosehip Whip Moisturizer. I have oily skin, but I still sometimes get dry patches, so the masque gently exfoliates and the moisturizer hydrates my skin without breaking me out. :-)

Interview with Jill Bickford of Elaa Organic Skincare

I am beyond excited and honored to share my very first interview here on my humble little blog. I wanted my first interview to be with someone who has not only inspired me to live a much healthier life, but who also has helped and inspired others through nutritional coaching, as well as skincare. So, I couldn't think of anyone better than the beautiful Jill Bickford, founder and creator of elaa skincare, a living, raw organic skincare unlike any other.

Jill is one of the warmest, most genuine people I've ever had the privilege of connecting with, and it was her story of how she struggled with and triumphed over a multitude of debilitating diseases that put me back on my own path of natural healing. It was through her that I first heard of the raw vegan lifestyle and after reading how she completely healed herself by eating an organic, raw plant based diet and using organic, raw, living plant based skincare, I knew I needed to change how I lived and how I looked at skincare.

When I found out that she had created her own skincare line, I couldn't wait to find out more (and I can't wait to try it out!!), so I reached out to Jill and asked her a few questions about it. Read on to find out more..:-)

The beautiful and radiant Jill Bickford!

elaa skincare

1) What inspired you to create your own skincare line?
Skincare has always been an important part of my life. From a few months old and throughout my life, I suffered with various skin conditions, like psoriasis, acne, and more. Over all, I have very sensitive skin. To this day I still get rashes on my body in reaction to various things. For over 20 years, I tried almost every line of skincare out there, in hopes of improving my skin. But, nothing I tried helped, and in many cases actually caused more harm. I began to study nutrition and skincare and discovered that I just needed to hit the “reset” button and restore my body to a more natural and healthy state of being. I detoxed myself from chemical skincare and began using healthy skincare and eating natural, living foods. Most of my chronic health conditions and skin conditions not only improved, but healed completely. Nutrient-dense foods, wild foods, and superfoods took things to the next level for me. I started experimenting with skincare and found that the exact same principles applied - Feed your skin like you feed your body. I achieved the best results with nutrient-dense wild, organic, and superfoods, living, enzymatically alive, active ingredients on my skin. The results have been quite remarkable. There is nothing else out there that had the types of ingredients that I wanted to use. I wanted the best, I wanted to use only the most alive, nutrient-dense ingredients, so I chose to create my own. When I experienced how passionate and alive I felt when I created these products and how much I could help others transform their lives, like I had transformed my own, I knew this was something that I needed to do.
Once I began been formulating, crafting, and using my own skincare, I received so many compliments on my skin . This has been quite astounding to me, because I was someone who lived with “bad” skin much of my life. It’s amazing how feeding your skin with living, active superfoods and plants truly affects not only the quality of your skin, but the quality of your life. Everything that you put on your skin gets absorbed into your body. Chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances have a profound affect on your health. They can cause reproductive and nervous system diseases, cancer, any other serious bodily disturbances. So, healthy skincare means more than just healthy skin, it means a healthy body and a better quality of life.
My body is sacred, so I treat myself that way. I love and honor myself with these products and my desire is to share that with you. Your body is sacred and that is the core inspiration behind creating this skincare line.
While I have insecurities, self-punishment, and self-doubt like a lot of people, at the core I love myself. My love expresses in many different ways in how I live my life and take care of myself. While taking care of my body is not the most important thing that there is in life, it still matters. It’s a daily way I love myself and show myself that I matter. When I’m feeling stressed, am moving too quickly, or am not feeling myself, something as small as taking the space and time to apply something truly nurturing and beautiful to my skin, to touch my body, feel and just be. . . . centers, grounds, and enlivens me. It brings me back to me. This skincare line is created to honor you and inspire you.

2) How is “elaa” different from other natural skincare lines out there?
elaa is not just a skincare line, it’s an expression and creation of love, care, and passion. Everything you experience with elaa, from the products, to the design, to the packaging, to the service comes from me and is personal and caring. It’s about honoring You. elaa really is more than just products, it’s a place to connect -  about skincare, health, and more. It’s a resource and a place to come where You are celebrated. elaa is for complete wellness. I also offer Health Coaching and/or Beauty Coaching. elaa is also a place where I share wonderful, informative articles, tips, and recipes.
I realize that like diets, there is no one size fits all. We are all one-of-a-kind and what works for one person may not work for another. So, I do my best to cater to as many different people, skin types, scent preferences, and desired results as possible. And, if someone has needs that are special, I formulate and create custom products to suit exactly who they are.
As far as the actual products, they are truly one-of-a-kind as well. Each product is lovingly formulated, created, and handcrafted by me. My formulas are unique and quite special. I deeply care. I don’t do anything half-heartedly, so when I do something, I go for it. elaa really is about going for it all the way. elaa is about soaring. . . using the most nutrient-dense, active, alive ingredients possible for the ultimate results, the reach your highest heights of aliveness, health, and beauty. Reaching your skin and body’s highest potential.

3) What would be the best product(s) for someone new to your line to try?
We are all beautifully one-of-a-kind, so I like to recommend products based on the individual. Contact me, let me know what you’re looking, and I’ll make a personalized recommendation.
You really can’t go wrong with anything, everything smells glorious, feels wonderful, and is ultra-nutritious. Bee Beauty was my first ever skincare creation, so it’s a “classic” that you can never go wrong with and it can serve many purposes.
I suggest going to the site, spending some time, and feeling what you are naturally drawn to, Or, if you are looking for help with a skin issue, look for a product made for that purpose, there are several options. And, please contact me for suggestions or with questions, I really look forward to connecting with you and helping you fulfill your skincare and health needs, desires, and dreams!
I also  share a lot of suggestions, tips, and special offers through my newsletter, so sign up to stay connected.
4) What is your personal skincare regimen like?
I like a lot of variety for my skin to get maximum nutrition, so I tend to rotate among all of my products.
My basic regimen includes:
2) Toner: either Gingko Hibiscus Pomegranate Skin Lifting Mist or Moonlight Mist or Citrus Sunrise
3) Eye Serum: Starlight Eye Nectar
4) Moisturizer: I also like to rotate among: Superfood Dream Cream, Rose Vanilla Antioxidant Face Cream Bee Beauty, and Rose Neroli Ambrosia Skin Silk
5) Lip Treatment: Rose Vanilla Lip Cream Gel
I also exfoliate 1 - 3 times per week, depending on what I am using and how my skin is feeling. Some people need to exfoliate daily. Here’s my favorite facial scrub: Cacao Goji Berry Antioxidant Facial Scrub. It’s chocolatey, nutty, and fruity deliciousness and gives a great polish for a wonderful glow.

I also use a Mask 1 - 2 times per week to deliver extra nutrients and deep clean my skin. I exfoliate with the Cacao Goji Scrub first, then apply a mask, my favorite mask right now is Rhassoul Matcha Skin Clearing Detox Mask

I like to feel what I need or want that day and go from there, so I like to have options available both for myself and for you on my site. Everyday is different and I like to be with that. Maybe one day, my skin feels like it just needs a serum and not an additional moisturizer. Maybe one morning I feel like I don’t need to cleanse, but instead I need to exfoliate and then use two different serums and twice as much moisturizer as usual. So, there are general steps and types of products that are good to follow and have for ideal skincare, but I also believe in “living” skincare usage that flows with the needs and desires of each day. I recommend having at hand the full range of products that you need, plus a few more for delight, and enjoy and use as you feel inspired to each day.
5) How important are ingredients in skincare? Is there such a thing as “too much of a good thing” in regards to certain ingredients?
Ingredients are everything. You want skincare that is nutrient-dense; skincare that feeds your skin with all the nutrition it needs, just like food. You don’t want food that is all fillers, processed, or devoid of any real nutrition. As your body’s largest organ, your skin needs nutrition too. You can’t get all of your nutrients from just two or three foods, you need a wide variety to get the full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, omega fatty acids, etc, that the body needs. The same applies to skincare. You want a variety of ingredients to fulfill the full spectrum of nutrients that the skin needs.
It’s about proper balance - of course there is no need to have ten ingredients that all deliver Vitamin C to the skin, but rather you want ingredients that each deliver their own unique nutrients, working together to provide complete nutrition for the skin. These ingredients should work synergistically together. So, it’s not about adding the kitchen sink of ingredients to one product, but rather targeted ingredients that work together to achieve the desired result.

7) What does “beauty” mean to you?
Beauty is an external expression of Love. Nature is infinite Beauty, it’s Love expressed in so many forms. The same is true for us. At essence, every body is beautiful on the outside and every person is beautiful on the inside because we are made of Love. Every curve of our body and every inch of our skin is miraculously beautiful. The people who are healthy, vital, and are able to be fully who they truly are, are the most beautiful. People who are Real are the most beautiful, because the Love inside of them is coming out and expressing through them. And I don’t mean “happiness” expressing when I say this, pain and anger is Love just as much as joy is, as long as it’s expressed truthfully and from the heart. So, Love expressing in every form is beautiful.
elaa is about promoting and enhancing who you are at your core, your natural beauty. When you are healthy and lovingly caring for yourself with the most transformational products and ways possible, you are the most alive and healthy you can be, and thus you are your most beautiful you.
8) If you had one piece of advice for women looking to choose more natural products, what would it be?
Empower yourself to choose what’s right for you. First do some learning - learn to recognize ingredients so you know which ones are unsafe and which ones are safe. Read labels and steer clear of chemicals, synthetics, preservatives, and fragrance. Find out how to recognize these ingredients when you see them on a label. Once you have that understanding, use and trust your senses. You can tell by smell and feel if a product is truly natural and how it’s made. And above all, use your intuition, you can feel what’s right for you. Trust that.

My Top Picks for Affordable Organic Skincare and Make-Up

While there are so many amazing and healing organic cosmetic brands out there, the sad truth is some of them are quite pricey, and a high price tag can often times deter people from buying them.

It's no secret that I am a strong advocate for the purest, most natural products out there. And while I do have a pretty strict criteria for what I would want to use on my own skin, I also understand that not everyone can afford to buy all of the same products I use. I've actually had a few people I know ask what I would recommend that they use in this case, so I came up with a list of affordable, yet still very effective and natural brands that get the "Sabrina stamp of green beauty approval". ;-)

  1. Organic Wear by Physician's Formula - While Physician's Formula uses ingredients that I personally would not touch with a fifty foot pole, the Organic Wear line is quite "clean". I've only tried the tinted moisturizer, eyeliner and mascara, but I've heard good things about the rest of the line as well. This line is free from synthetic preservatives, GMO's, parabens and harsh chemicals. It's also cruelty free and does not contain synthetic fragrances either. The mascara is probably the best mascara I've ever tried and the tinted moisturizer contains ingredients such as fruit water to hydrate and balance the skin and oils like jojoba, avocado, sunflower seed and shea butter to keep skin soft and nourished. The best part is you can find this at stores like Target, Walmart or Wegman's and the prices are very wallet friendly - ranging anywhere from $6.95 to $13.95.
  2. Annmarie Gianni Organic Skincare - I've only tried one of their sample kits, but what I tried made me an instant fan. The products are not just nourishing and healing for the skin, but are also therapeutic for the mind, body and soul as well. I will definitely be adding more of her products to my skincare collection soon! I also love that you can purchase a sample kit for $10 (I tried the anti-aging kit with the Dead Sea Scrub) and you get a $10 coupon back to use on a full sized product later. Not bad, since her products range from $24.95 to $54.95 (which for the quality and effectiveness of the products is really quite inexpensive).
  3. Naturallogic - This little gem can be found on the Etsy website and is probably one of the most inexpensive brands I've seen with the purest ingredients listed. Not only does it contain pure plant based ingredients, but it has skin firming DMAE and MSM in some of the formulations as well. Prices range from $3.00 on up.
  4. The All Natural Face - This is probably one of the least expensive brands I've come across, and one that has some of the best products out there. They have one of the largest foundation shade selections I have ever seen and you can purchase their foundation sampler pack for $5.75 and it contains 20 baggies of every shade they have in your range (pale to medium or medium to dark). The samples are very generous too. They have beautiful blushes. glow veils, and eyeshadows (which you can also buy sample packs of), and some really great skin care products as well. The only negative I can find with this brand is that some of their products contain Cosmocil CQ, a preservative that I can't find much consistent info on, other than it is used in contact lens solution and baby wipes. The site states that it is a mild preservative, but I am the type that if I can't find all the facts on my own, I tend to shy away. That being said, I still love this brand and would recommend it to anyone. Prices range from $1.75 up
  5. Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques - I know I have mentioned this brand quite a bit and have even written a few reviews on them, but this truly is one of my favorite as well as wallet friendly companies out there. Even if you think that the prices seem high to you (honestly they are not really any higher than Bare Minerals), you can purchase samples of everything and the samples last quite awhile. You really don't need to use much of any of the products to get beautiful results. Also, the make-up pretty much doubles as skincare, as all of the ingredients work to nourish, heal and even out skin tone. I can't say enough good things about this company. :-) Prices range from $8.50-$27.00
  6. Andalou Naturals - This brand is on my "wish list" and I hope to try it out soon. I have, however, researched the line and was impressed by what I found, not just with price, but with most of the ingredients, and their philosophy on social responsibility, product formulation, etc. Andalou Naturals combines both nature and science using "fruit stem cell science" to renew, regenerate and repair skin. They have a wide range of products, including body and hair care. They are also non-GMO, something I always look for if the product isn't stated as being organic. Prices range from $9.95 -$24.95
  7. Dr. Bronner's Magic All in One Soaps - I use the un-scented baby mild liquid soap as a body wash and sometimes face wash at night, but I read you can also use any of the liquid soaps as a shampoo, dish and laundry soap, as well as a general cleaning product. It truly is multi-purposeful. It contains skin loving ingredients such as organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, organic hemp oil and vitamin E. Prices vary depending on size or store, but generally ranges from $6.39-16.99.
  8. 100% Pure - Another of my "wish list" brands, the make-up is made from fruit and vegetable pigments and the skincare is just as pure. Prices range from $8 on up, but for the quality of ingredients, it's really quite cost effective.
Honorable mentions - Everyday Minerals (their IT and Jojoba bases), Lucy Minerals (Lucy Light foundation and Finishing powder, eyeshadows, blush and bronzer), and Honeybee Gardens (only because I just discovered them and haven't yet tried anything so can't really give an opinion, other than the prices are great).

I'm sure there are some brands that I am forgetting, but this is a good starting list for those of you that want to make the switch to more natural, non-toxic brands. The important thing to remember is that the more pure the ingredients, the less you need to use of the product, so it will end up lasting you longer, thus saving you money in the long run. :-)

Peace and Love,
~Sabrina

Guest Post: The Beauty Benefits of Oil Pulling - by Kate from "Living Pretty Naturally"

Happy Friday! Today, I am honored to share a post from another one of my favorite natural health and lifestyle bloggers, Kate from "Living Pretty Naturally." If you haven't checked out her site yet, you need to do so! :-) Her blog encompasses a wide range of health and beauty topics, recipes, reviews, tips, tricks and so on.

Kate was kind enough to allow me to re-post a piece she already had up on her site, so I decided to share this one which focuses on "oil pulling." It's a topic I have read a little bit about, but have not yet tried. I felt that Kate's post really explains it in a way that is not only easy to understand, but also gives a clear step by step on how to do it. After reading this, I am definitely intrigued and inspired to try it and I hope you will be too! Make sure to check out her lovely blog and like her on Facebook as well!

Thank you again Kate for letting me share this wonderful piece! :-)

Peace and Love,

"An Ancient Ayurvedic Ritual for Clearer Skin, Whiter Teeth & Overall Wellness: The Beauty Benefits of Oil Pulling"

Spring is in the air, and nothing says spring cleaning like “detox”.  But this ain’t no juice cleanse, Gorgeous, this is an ancient ritual that will help clear your skin, whiten your teeth and does it all 100% toxic free. If you haven’t heard of oil pulling, at first read, you may think it sounds a bit far fetched. But, if I’ve learned anything in my twenty-some-odd years on this planet, it is that you should never knock it until you try it…especially when ancient people have sworn by it for thousands of years.

What is Oil Pulling?

From the roots of Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling is an age-old ritual that is said to do wonders for your beauty and body. It is essentially the practice of swishing your mouth with oil for 15 minutes every morning to detox your lymphatic system and maintain optimum dental health (which leads to overall health and wellness benefits). Oil pulling is completely harmless and inexpensive, so before you close your eyes to it, read on, give it a try for a few weeks and then decide.

New to Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a traditional Hindu system of medicine, which uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing to heal and balance. It is based on the five elements (earth, air, water, fire and space), which combined into the three doshas: vata, kapha, and pitta. Having a balance of these doshas is what leads to ultimate health. Now without getting too technical (I am no Ayurvedic specialist), wherever you have an imbalance is where you would focus and heal with diet, herbs, meditation, exercise, yoga and massage.
benefits of oil pulling
Dr. Bruce Fife, naturopathic physician who has actually written a book on the subject of Oil Pulling, notes:

“Most of the chronic and infectious illnesses that trouble our society today are influenced by the health of our mouths. Our mouths are a reflection of the health inside our bodies…Simply improving the health of your teeth and gums can cure many chronic problems….The oil acts like a cleanser. When you put it in your mouth and work it around your teeth and gums it “pulls” out bacteria and other debris…oil pulling has a very powerful detoxifying effect.”

Oil Pulling has a great many benefits to overall health – and a healthy body translates into natural beauty.

The Beauty & Health Benefits of Oil Pulling

I started oil pulling last fall, and here are just some of the benefits I’ve been enjoying:
  • Whiter teeth (with no chemical bleaching agents – i.e. white strips and bleaching trays)
  • Pinker (read: healthier) gums
  • Clearer skin
  • Fresher breath (I love my garlic, so this is a benefit I’m loving)
With long term use other health and beauty benefits include:
  • Regulation of menstrual cycle & improved PMS symptoms
  • Decreased inflammation in your body
  • Reduced headaches
  • Better sleep (a natural beauty key)
  • Fights cavities & gingivitis
  • Improved (less toxically loaded) lymphatic system
  • Increased energy
Further claims have been made that oil pulling has beneficial affects on:
  • Arthritis
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Eczema
  • Heart Disease
  • Kidney Disease
  • Fibromyalgia and many autoimmune diseases

How Does Oil Pulling Work?

How does swishing oil in your mouth achieve all these benefits? Well, think of the digestive system as one – because it is. In fact, your digestive system is essentially a single organ from the mouth to the “exit point”. Toxins and nutrients that flow through the lymphatic system and other channels in the body  get absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract (read: stomach & intestines). This is often why the tongue is such an important diagnostic tool in traditional Chinese medicine. In short, oil pulling removes toxins through your mouth and glands by absorbing them through your mucous membranes.

How Do I Oil Pull?

Starting your own practice of oil pulling is easy, quick and cheap. It simply requires:
  • 1 – 3 TSP of an oil of your choice (I prefer raw & organic coconut oil as it naturally has antibacterial/anti-fungal/antiviral properties from its caprylic and lauric acid content  - Artisana is a great option – but you can use any pure vegetable oil like sunflower or sesame)
  • Any additions you prefer (I add 2 drops of Oil of Oregano for an extra “antibacterial” effect, but this is not necessary to get the benefits of oil pulling)
I start my oil pulling on an empty stomach each morning:
  1. Rinsing my mouth out with water
  2. Put coconut oil + oregano oil in my mouth (I don’t mind starting with solid-state coconut oil, as it melts quickly in your mouth, but if that bugs you, melt it down in a pot first)
  3. Swish for 15 – 20 minutes (I often do this when I am showering, as I multitask during my morning routine, which you can read about here)
  4. Spit into toilet (oil can clog the sink)
  5. Rinse out mouth and brush teeth (I have a separate toothbrush for my oil pulling, which I regularly disinfect with baking soda and HOT water)
DO NOT gargle and DO NOT swallow – the solution is filled with microbes, toxins and bacteria.
Let me know your experience with oil pulling, and keep me posted on your progress. Remember this is no over night treatment, although you will likely notice a change in your gums and teeth within a week.

What are your thoughts on oil pulling? Have any of you tried this yet? I'd love to know what you think!

Have a great weekend!
